Have a Little Help, Give a Little Help
In 1968, English singer Joe Cocker released the famous song “With a Little Help from My Friends.” Though it was written by members of the Beatles, Joe’s version is known worldwide. The song’s message remains relevant today: we all need help from friends. We can’t do this alone.
This idea is rooted in the Bible. God said in Genesis 2:18, “It’s not good for man to be alone,” and created Eve as a helpmate for Adam. While this was a romantic relationship, the same principle applies to platonic relationships.
It’s important to understand the difference between isolation and solitude. Isolation is a tool the enemy uses to make us vulnerable and lead us astray. Whenever we isolate, we set ourselves up for something wrong. On the other hand, solitude is what God uses to help us recharge and refocus. It’s where we can hear God clearly and gain clarity on what’s next.
Isolation cuts us off from others, while solitude connects us with God. This distinction is crucial.
The biblical equation for victory in our lives is: God + us + the right people = victory!
Ecclesiastes 4:12 says, “A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.” Victory comes when we have others in our lives. This is God’s design, and we thrive when we follow it.
God’s plan is that we receive help and give help. Whenever we succeed, it’s because someone helped us get there. I encourage you to live a life that is humble enough to receive help from friends and to give help to them. This is where we thrive and find vision beyond ourselves.
The healthiest people embrace a purpose beyond themselves. This is where we grow and become more, where God wants us, and where He uses us the most.
So, do you have a little help, and are you giving a little help? Make a decision to be part of something bigger than yourself. See those around you and reach out. God uses these efforts when we step out.
