Starting The Year Right

Starting off right is important in our lives. When we do this, it sets the tone and trajectory of what’s next. Furthermore, we want this in our lives. Things like marriage, careers, school, having kids, finances, starting the new year and so much more. There’s something great about starting off right.

However this doesn’t always happen and we can find ourselves stumbling along. The good news is we can always start again or reset what we’re doing and get a new start.

In Jesus, we have the chance to start off right, and or have a second chance. This is amazing grace.

So no matter how 2024 has begun for you, we can start the year right by setting aside time in seeking God with prayer and fasting!

Something special happens when we pray and fast!

When we seek God, we will find Him.

”12. In those days when you pray, I will listen. 13. If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me.“

Jeremiah‬ ‭29‬:‭12‬-‭13‬

Notice God promises that we will find Him! Our part is to seek Him. This takes intentionality and effort. Not in the sense of earning it, but rather hungering for Him.

This is why prayer and fasting helps us set aside hunger and desire and turn it toward Him. We can feed our hunger for God through prayer and fasting.

We believe 2024 is the year of the Way Maker!

Meaning that God is going to make a way that we didn’t know was there. This is found in Psalms 77:19.

”Your road led through the sea, your pathway through the mighty waters— a pathway no one knew was there!“

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭77‬:‭19‬

How can God make a way for you?

He’s willing and ready to move through your prayers and respond to your faith. This is one reason why prayer and fasting are so important in starting the year right.

It aligns us with prayers, and thanksgiving in what He’s done and in what He will do. Fasting helps us feed our faith and starve our distractions as we lean in toward God.

Here’s the principle. When we draw near to God, He draws near to us. He responds to our hunger and desire for Him. What we feed on the most, is what we hunger for the most. This is how James says it,

”Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world.“

James‬ ‭4‬:‭8‬

This is why I encourage you to engage with prayer and fasting this month. Allow God to take hold of your heart and to move through your life. Starting the year off right sets the tone for what’s next and helps us be aligned with Jesus in what He’s doing in our lives.

So, here’s two thoughts to help with prayer and fasting.

First, make a decision.

When we make the decision, He gives the provision. Make a decision you will fast something. This posture gives clarity and focus for the duration of the fast.

This is simple but it’s profound. When we make the decision, God gives the provision. This applies to going to church regularly, giving to God, prayer, fasting, being a volunteer and more.

When we do this, we overcome being double minded and our mind locks in. This is where miracles happen. This is where God answers prayers. This is where we see God, know God and get close to God. This is where we grow.

Go for it!

Make the decision to start the year right through prayer and fasting and watch yourself grow!

Second, have specific focus.

When we pray and fast it’s vital we have specific focuses with things and people we’re praying for. This gives direction in what we’re doing and it a focus to our faith. Then, when God answers prayers, we can check it off and see that God did it.

This builds my faith every year because God does the things we seek Him about.

So for 2024, think about writing specific things and people you’re seeking God about. Believe that He will move. You can also utilize the prayer guides with daily themes for prayer and Bible reading.

All of this helps give specific focus to what we’re doing and praying for. He’s able and ready. Our job is to ask and watch Him move.

You’ve got this! Start the year right and watch Him move!

God is with you and the best is yet to come,

PD
