Treasure in the Field

Right now basketball is intense. We have three boys playing for different teams which means, multiple practice schedules and figuring out who will take them and when.

It’s the best of times and it’s busy times, but these are the days and I’m taking in the moments.

Next to one of our boys practice facility is a massive field sectioned off by an old fence.

It has a few rolling hills littered with bushes, random trees and cows. When the sun is setting, it hits the field with a cool glaze that makes it look like a postcard of Midwest lore.

This field may seem insignificant to those that park by it and that drive by it, but to the owner, it’s so much more. It’s a treasure to his family as it represents legacy, family equity and opportunity.

There’s no doubt that for this field’s owner, there’s treasure in the field.

But this blog isn’t about a random field in Indiana, it’s about a spiritual truth that Jesus articulated in the gospels.

Did you know that Jesus used a field to give a picture of the heart of God?

“The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure that a man discovered hidden in a field. In his excitement, he hid it again and sold everything he owned to get enough money to buy the field.”

Matthew‬ ‭13‬:‭44‬

Notice the Kingdom of God is compared to a treasure in a field that is hidden and was worth more than everything its owner had.

What does this mean for us?

Often times fields can be overlooked and viewed as having no value. They can be for our area, a place for cows with nothing else to add. But in that field is a treasure and when it’s found, it’s value is everything.

Jesus builds His Kingdom with the treasure found in the fields.

He reaches for people that are overlooked, devalued and ignored. He loves the unlovable and He gives grace to the humble. He makes new what is old and He heals what is broken. Jesus uses the treasure in the field because it glorifies Him. It reflects what grace can do and what the mercy of God can bring when someone is touched by His love.

In many ways we are the treasure in the field. Many parts of us have been buried and overlooked. We’ve had setbacks and disappointments. We’ve felt pain and the sting of life and yet, Jesus is there to redeem it all. He’s there to take our mess and reveal the treasure He has inside of us.

“Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And He chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful.”

1 Corinthians‬ ‭1‬:‭27‬

This is how the Kingdom of God advances. This is how Jesus builds His church, one person at a time, from the treasure in the field.

Do you feel forgotten, overlooked, unqualified, devastated, disappointed, imperfect and nothing to give?

You are the person Jesus wants!

You are the treasure in the field and God sees something in you that is beyond what you know. He has something for you beyond what you see. He can do something through and beyond your ability. This is what Jesus does when we let Him have our lives.

“And this is the secret: Christ lives in you. This gives you assurance of sharing His glory.”

Colossians‬ ‭1‬:‭27‬

No matter how you see the field of your life, Jesus has a treasure in it! Let Him out. He’s with you and the best is yet to come!

Have a great week,

PD
