god over money
Money is NOT the root of all evil. It’s the LOVE of money that’s the root of all kinds of evil. This is what 1 Timothy 6:10 says, but it’s often misquoted.
The idea that’s conveyed is, money is bad and it must be tolerated as we live in this life. But the truth is, money is not bad. It’s arbitrary and in someone’s hand, it can do good or do bad. Which is why we must have God be over money so that, we’re empowered to do good with it!!
When God is over something in our lives, He makes it healthy. Notice, it’s not perfect but it can be healthy. This applies to our relationships, diet, attitude, career, parenting, boundaries, self-esteem and yes, our money.
Isn’t this what we want?
Of course, and the good news is, with God this is possible.
But it all starts with God over these things!
““No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.”
Matthew 6:24
Mammon was an ancient deity that certain nations would worship. It was connected to making them rich and depending on this idol to do it.
The challenge was, people were often led into idol worship for their wealth, which took them away from God. From this, they would not only worship a false god but would also worship the object they were seeking. Thus money would become the center of their lives and that was wrong.
Today, this verse applies to us too!
We must be intentional to have God be over money in our hearts, so that we’re tripped up in this subtle deceit.
While most of us in the USA don’t bow down in front of mammon, we can still do this in other ways. We can resent giving in church and not do it. We can debate if tithing is right or not. We can be overly concerned about what others have, what TV preachers have and what we have, that we compare and compete in our hearts. We can also have money be the driving force of our lives and we can use it as a tool of power and control.
These things and more, are ways we can serve mammon and in the process, block God from doing something in our hearts.
But when God is over money, our hearts are clean and our affection is on God. This means, we’re willing and faithful givers to the local church. We’re at peace with tithing and giving offerings. We’re happy for others and realize, we’ll answer to God for how WE handled our money. We use money as a tool to do good and to bless others. These are some of the ways it shows up in our lives that, we serve God and NOT mammon.
Is God over your money today?
This is big step in our faith journey and when it’s taken, God provides in amazing ways.
Here’s the secret. When God is over our money, He opens His provision into our lives. This means we can see His favor, His goodness and His opportunities come our way. It’s my belief this happens, little by little and step at a time. This is NOT a rich quick scheme. It’s rather God’s plan to increase His church on the earth and to bless His people.
When we put God over our money, it’s saying to Him, my trust is in You. Meaning, at the end of the day, He’s our source and our money is the resource He gives. This is huge because we’re tempted to think, our job is our source but it’s not. God is! He’s the provider and when we live this way, He will pour out a blessing, there’s not room enough to receive (see Malachi 3.10-12).
This is a mind shift!
God is my source, NO MATTER what. So, whatever goes on around me, doesn’t control me. The money that comes to me, is a resource I steward. And, whatever I give to God, can multiply into more.
It’s my encouragement today, let God be over your money.
With Jesus, anything is possible and the best is yet to come!
Have a great day and God bless you,
PD
