Remember, mirror mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all? This famous line from the iconic story Snow White, has been immortalized since 1937, when the movie first came out.
For some reason, this line can be quoted by so many as it not only speaks to the original movie, but I believe it also speaks to us personally.
What is your Reflection in the mirror telling you?
If you’re like me, the answer depends on the day and on the feeling I’m processing. How about you?
However, there’s something profound with this because, most of the time, our reflection is telling us what we believe about ourselves. It’s in this place that we’re just us, no makeup, no pretense, no acting and no pretending, just us. This is where we’re honest with ourselves as the Reflection in the mirror is speaking something to us.
Far too often, we put ourselves down and even call ourselves names based on mistakes, struggles and repeated issues. It seems, a lot of the times, we’re down on ourselves and the emotions of shame and guilt are heavy upon our shoulders. Have you felt that weight? Yeah, it’s heavy and many times, too heavy to bare.
But there’s good news, there’s a remedy to this!
Jesus gives us a new perspective by believing what He says we are in His word. It’s here, where we see who we are in Jesus and what He says we can be. This is massive because, it shapes our identity in a new way in what God says about us. Jesus wants to set us free from guilt and shame, and embrace who we are through Him.
Ephesians 2:10 says this,
“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”
Notice, we’re God’s masterpiece or, work of art. He’s made us on purpose, for a purpose and we have good things to do in Him! This is huge because this shapes how we think of our bodies, our gifts, our lives our past, present and our futures. This defines us as more than human, it defines us as a child of God. Furthermore, we have good things to do in Jesus to make an impact for eternity.
However, on a daily basis, our reflections can be lying to us by putting us in the past and by defining us by something other than the word of God.
Isn’t this a struggle?
I know it is for me because I have to choose daily, what my reflection will tell me. Which means, I choose the word of God!
This is why, what we believe about our reflections is huge.
Proverbs 23:7 says this,
“For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.”
Notice, what we believe about ourselves is what we’ve become. This is why the enemy is always trying to get us to demean ourselves and to believe lies about who we are. But, when I believe what God says, that is what I become and that speaks to my identity.
For all of us today, our reflection in the mirror tells us many things that are not true. Therefore, at some point, we have to choose that God’s word will define us more than anything else, and what He says is our truth!
This decision is freeing! It’s empowering! It’s life changing and it’s identity forming!
So I encourage you today, lead your reflection in the mirror to echo the Word of God! Let His thoughts about you, become your thoughts about yourself!
Here’s a couple of ways on how to do this.
First, get a few verses that speaks to identity and put them on your bathroom mirror. Speak these verses over yourself every day and as you hear God’s word through your voice, it does something in your heart. This is a simple step that all of us can do!
Second, no matter what comes at you, always go to the Word of God on what to do. Opinions, trends, revenge, telling people off, and doing whatever you want, does not lead us into identity. It leads us into conformity. There’s a better way and it’s Jesus! It’s His word in our lives that can lead through the good, bad and the ugly. When we do this, we’re shaping our identity to be what God says so that at the end of the day, the Reflections in the mirror, speak who we are in Jesus!
Mirror mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all? Jesus! So may His identity be formed in you for complete health spirit, soul and body!
Love and believe in you,
