I’m confused, what should the church be?
Faith is a massive part of our lives. It impacts so much in us and around us. Even Secular psychologists say that spirituality is a big part of having fulfillment in life. This is interesting to me as it confirms what the Bible says.
I believe that Jesus is the hope of the world. In Him we find life, hope and truth. This is not being narrow-minded but rather receiving the free gift from God as He made a way for you and for me by living, dying, and being raised from the dead. Through all of this, Jesus started His church. His movement on the earth today is led by the Holy Spirit.
His church is designed to be a place where all people are welcome. It’s designed to be a hospital where we find healing and recovery through His love and power. It’s a place that is a force of change, hope and unity. It’s a place where all people find acceptance and life change through His power. This is what I long to have as a leader in His church. I want to reach people with His love and be a beacon of His light as best as I can.
However, there is debate on what His church should be.
As I hear different perspectives it leaves me saying to myself, I’m confused, what should the church be.
To me it’s real simple and out of all the verses that we can choose from, I love what He said in Matthew 5:14, 16.
“14. You are the light of the world, like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. 16. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”Matthew 5:14, 16
Notice we are His light in this world. We are to shine bright for all to see. This speaks to me of a church being proactive, aggressive, reaching out, majoring on the majors, and seeking to win as many people as possible. Jesus loves everyone and because of that we love everyone. Jesus is reaching for everyone and because of that we are reaching for everyone. The heart of God is people! This is why He sent Jesus to the world and His church is empowered to exude His light.
This also speaks to me that His church should seek to grow. This is a debated point but it shouldn’t be. The reality is, people are looking for hope. Jesus is the savior of the world and we are to seek as many people as possible; therefore, we want to grow as a church. To me it’s not hard. Growth is not bad but so often it is viewed as wrong, skeptical, compromising and more. How sad! Jesus is the desire of the nations and our heart is to reach as many people as possible. We are to be filled with the cause of God and that is to lead people to Him, period!
Then notice Jesus said to do good works so that people glorify Him. This speaks to me of a church that is proactive in reaching out to people. It’s not waiting on people to come to them but rather it’s going out to people. This is not promotional and this is not a gimmick, this is the heart of God. In fact, Jesus said in Matthew 28, go into all the world! He said go and He means go. This is to our neighbors, our coworkers, strangers, family, and more! We are empowered to go and when we do, God moves with us. I believe we don’t have time to debate what the church should be because many are in desperate need for Him.
I’m stirred personally because I have known 20 people that have passed away. I’ve seen death and it leaves a mark. I’ve lost old partying buddies, old teammates, friends and even my childhood best friend. I have allowed this pain to shape my heart in God. I have a passion to reach out and to lead a church that reaches out as much as possible. I believe so many are praying private prayers like this, “God, if you are real, please help me.”
Maybe you are praying this prayer, and there is hope. You have our love and support and Jesus can do anything in your life.
So what will we do?
At times I say to myself, I’m confused, what should the church be?
From my view of scripture, it’s to be His light on a hill, and doing good for all to see. It’s not our job to judge others, straighten them out, correct them with our doctrine or prove points. Our job to show Jesus to people everywhere. The Holy Spirit convicts us of our wrong and he changes people, not us. Our doctrines are not to be dogmas but rather beliefs to strengthen our faith. We are the church and we should act like it!
I encourage you today to be a part of a local church. Get involved, be on a team and make a difference in the life of someone else. I know that you’re facing personal things and at times it’s a struggle, but we grow when we give to something bigger than ourselves. I also encourage you to overcome imperfections in the church. Forgive others, love others, make friends with others, and embrace the cause of God through His church. Don’t be isolated rather be insulated with community.
Our time is now and Jesus wants to use you and me. Keep it simple! Shine out so others may see His light and let God use you in profound ways.
So if you’re like me and you say I’m confused, what should the church be?
Shine bright, be bold and do good! It’s simple and Jesus is powerful. Move forward because God has something great for you.
Have a great week and the best is yet to come,
